Thank goodness it has not happen while I am driving. When the vehicle was started, the steering wheel failed and became difficult to turn. We were parked I had to drive it to the dealership with no power steering. In point of fact the new york times has even written an article in 2015 documenting power steering failure and the injuries that have occurred due to it. The vehicle is currently in the shop with a possible rack-and-pinion replacement or a steering column replacement once the problem is fully diagnosed. This is a safety hazard I think ford should fix. On the last occurrence the issue would not clear leaving the car with manual steering.
Kind of scared to drive it now though, what if that happens when im in motion???? I have had my car at a ford service department and they told me there are no open recalls or bulletins. Power cycling the car a few times will initialize the steering control for the time being. The manufacturer is denying responsibility. While driving 25 mph, the power steering failed without warning. The manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. My wife had the kids in the car with her heading to the store and it went out and she had no clue what to do and not strong enough to force the wheel to get the car off the road so she was left sitting in the middle of the highway with the kids until the steering would work again. Until next time that is. The power steering is completely out.

I have called ford and told them about it. On top of these 2 days ago while trying to back out from a parking lot the steering wheel went dead and a warning came up on the dashboard screen saying the power steering is out. Called ford motors company and they said it's nothing they can do since the car is out of warranty. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The dust cover under the motor is nothing more than a piece of cardboard with some sprayed on fuzzy fake material covering one side. A lot of Focus 2012 have same issues. The dealership service department said the rack and pinion module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to szott ford 8800 e holly rd, holly, mi 48442, phone: 248 634-4411 where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion failed and needed to be replaced. Display on vehicle says problem is electric assist for power steering. This worked for two weeks. The vehicle was not repaired due to the repair fees. On october 23, 2018, the power steering light came on while in motion and completely disable my ability to control the car.
This is one of three cars we have and we now only use this one when absolutely necessary and we always make sure at least two of us has our cell phone on in case we have to help with the disabled Focus. They found failure with the power steering control module.
