She longed for an education and dreamed of a school she would go to, but until then she started making her way to the public library. After some days of practice, Matilda suddenly turns the tables to stand up to her parents and outwit the principal. She requests to Miss Trunchbull that Matilda to be moved up to a higher class, but Miss Trunchbull refuses. She and Matilda sneak into Miss Trunchbull's house while she is out to obtain some of Miss Honey's belongings, but Miss Trunchbull's unexpected return leads to a cat-and-mouse chase, with them only barely escaping without revealing themselves. She met her best friend and had a wonderful teacher Miss Honey who held a deep secret.
Miss Honey subsequently moves back into her father's house and Matilda is a frequent visitor. As she gets fed up with the constant cruelty, Matilda begins to realize that she has a gift of telekinetic powers. The climactic scene where she is whacked by erasers required her to keep her eyes open, causing dust to get caught in her eyes and necessitating several trips to the hospital to get her eyes washed out. However, when Matilda realizes she has the power of telekinesis, she begins to defend her friends from Trunchbull's wrath and fight back against her unkind parents. Trunchball Hall was a scary school, dull and drab but had kid's there just the same, so Matilda was happy. Both her demeanor and her looks bring the book's character alive.
